On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the Fisheries Resources Utilization Study Program in collaboration with the Research Board and Organization (BPPM) of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Brawijaya held an event to release Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) students who worked with the East Java Provincial Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The event took place in the Meeting Room on the 2nd floor of the main building of FFMS UB and was attended by Prof. Dr.Sc. Asep Awaludin Prihanto, M.P., Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at FFMS UB; Dr. Fuad, S.Pi., M.T., Head of the Fisheries Resources Utilization Study Program; Budi Setyono, S.Pi., M.Agr., Head of UPT PPP Pondokdadap; Ir. Sukandar, M.P., Head of BPPM; several lecturers from the Fisheries Resources Utilization Study Program; and 22 FFMS UB students who served as fish stock enumerators at 10 ports in the East Java region.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Fuad, S.Pi., M.T., explained that the MBKM program has many benefits, including enhancing students’ competencies. MBKM provides a platform for students to deepen their knowledge beyond what is taught in the classroom but is relevant in the field. As a result, after graduation, students can adapt more quickly to the working world. Additionally, the MBKM event, which collaborates with the East Java Provincial Department of Fisheries, lasts for approximately 6 months. During this time, students are expected to combine MBKM activities, internships, and thesis writing. After completing MBKM, students can return to campus to finalize their internship reports and theses. All of this aligns with the spirit of MBKM promoted by the government, which aims to give students the freedom to determine their learning path in higher education.

Furthermore, Prof. Asep Awaludin Prihanto added that the MBKM program is expected to accelerate students’ graduation and enrich their experiences. Prof. Asep also emphasized the importance of exploring as many thesis topics as possible, considering that FFMS UB offers a Fast Track program that allows students to pursue their master’s degree before completing their bachelor’s degree.

The final remarks were delivered by Budi Setyono, S.Pi., M.Agr. He emphasized that MBKM is a tangible manifestation of collaboration between the East Java Provincial Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and FFMS UB. In addition to technical and academic aspects, students will also learn about social issues when partnering with fishing communities in the field. [ALF/YFS]
