In an effort to improve the competence of students of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya (FFMS UB) in the field of fish cultivation, a training entitled “Basic Fish Health Assessment” was held on November 8-9, 2024. The training, which took place in the Exhibition Room, 1st Floor, FFMS UB Main Building, was attended by around 100 students from various study programs.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Tamrin Bin Mohd Lal from Borneo Marine Research Institute, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, was the main speaker in this training. Dr. Tamrin shared in-depth insights on basic techniques in identifying and treating fish diseases—knowledge that is very important in maintaining the productivity and sustainability of fish farming. Also present were the Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Alumni, and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Eng. Abu Bakar Sambah, S.Pi., MT., and Attabik Mukhamad Amrillah, S.Pi., M.Si., who gave their full support to the organization of this event.

The first day of training began with a classical presentation by Dr. Tamrin, who discussed various basic techniques in identifying and diagnosing fish diseases. He emphasized the importance of early detection to prevent the spread of diseases that have the potential to reduce cultivation productivity.

On the second day, participants participated in laboratory practice to directly apply the knowledge they had learned. This practice involved the use of diagnostic tools and direct observation of fish samples, aiming to make students more skilled in recognizing early symptoms of disease.

Through this training, students are expected to improve their skills in the fish farming industry, especially in terms of health and disease control. One participant stated, “This training is very useful for us as prospective fisheries practitioners. We can understand more deeply about proper fish health management.”

With this training, FFMS UB hopes that students will be more prepared to face challenges in the world of work and be able to apply the knowledge gained in sustainable fish farming practices. [ATB/ALF]
