
The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya (FFMS UB) held a series of activities in the Student Mobility program between Universitas Brawijaya and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). This activity began with an opening ceremony and technical meeting which took place in a hybrid manner, attended by the leaders of FFMS UB, including Prof. Dr.Sc. Asep Awaludin Prihanto, S.Pi., MP (Vice Dean for Academic Affairs), Prof. Dr.Eng. Abu Bakar Sambah, S.Pi., MT (Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Alumni and Student Entrepreneurship), and the Head of the Marine Science Study Program, Ade Yamindago, S.Kel., MP, M.Sc., Ph.D. From UMT, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faridah Binti Mohamad (Dean of the Faculty of Science and Science Environment), Assoc. Prof. Chm. Dr. Maisara Binti Abdul Kadir (Deputy Dean of Academic & Student Affairs), Assoc. Prof. Ts. Chm. Dr. Ong Meng Chuan, as well as students from both institutions.
In his speech, Prof. Asep introduced various international academic programs that have been run by FFMS UB, such as visiting professor, adjunct professor, staff and student exchanges, as well as research collaboration and joint publications. Meanwhile, Prof. Abu Bakar explained the student mobility program that allows students to study outside their study program for up to three semesters, including student exchanges, internships, teaching assistants, and other projects. He also explained about the Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) from the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology and the Brawijaya International Student Mobility Award (BISMA), which has involved students in international activities for one week.
Ade Yamindago, Ph.D., also introduced the UB Marine Science Study Program which was established in 2008 with 23 lecturers, including two professors, and is committed to producing professional and internationally competitive graduates. He also highlighted the international collaborations that have been carried out, such as visits to NTU Singapore and UMT, as well as joint research with UNIMAS Malaysia and Hokkaido University. In addition, Dr. Ong from UMT explained the profile of the Marine Science program at UMT, including student mobility, exchanges, and internship opportunities in Taiwan, China, and Indonesia.
As part of the Student Mobility program, FFMS UB also held a Studium Generale themed “The Next Level of Marine Research for Sustainable Development.” The event, which took place in the second floor meeting room of FFMS UB, presented marine experts from Indonesia and Malaysia. Dr. Izan binti Jaafar (UMT Malaysia) discussed concrete steps to deal with climate change in Malaysian waters, while Prof. Aida Sartimbul (FFMS UB) reviewed its impact on the fisheries sector in Indonesia.
The issue of marine pollution was highlighted in the presentation by the Secretary of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources Utilization Defri Yona, S.Pi., M.Sc.stud., D.Sc. (FFMS UB), while Ade Yamindago, Ph.D., studied the bioassay of marine pollutants on aquatic organisms in Indonesia. In addition, Dr. Monaliza binti Mohd. Din (UMT Malaysia) highlighted the Harmful Algal Bloom phenomenon in Malaysian waters.
This activity is an important forum for academics and researchers to discuss challenges and solutions for the sustainability of marine ecosystems. In addition to sharing scientific insights, this event strengthens international collaboration in marine research. The discussions that take place are also expected to encourage the birth of new innovations and research-based policies to answer global environmental challenges. Through this activity, academics and researchers are encouraged to play an active role in the protection and management of marine resources sustainably for a better future. [rza/yfs]
