The history of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya, began with the College of Marine Fisheries Department which was founded on October 28 1962 by the Probolinggo Education Foundation. Since May 25 1963, through PTIP Ministerial Decree No. 163 In 1963, the College of Marine Fisheries Department became one of the Departments at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry (FKHP) Universitas Brawijaya which is located in Malang. Meanwhile, the Department of Marine Fisheries is still based in Probolinggo.
At the end of 1970, FKHP Universitas Brawijaya had a new department, namely the Department of Veterinary Medicine, which was based in Surabaya. Thus, FKHP Universitas Brawijaya has three departments, namely Animal Husbandry, Marine Fisheries and Veterinary Medicine. Then in August 1972, the Department of Veterinary Medicine merged with Airlangga University in Surabaya, while the Department of Marine Fisheries changed to the Department of Fisheries. In order to facilitate management and development, since 1972 the Fisheries Department has been gradually moved to Malang.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0220/0/1973, since January 1 1973 FKHP was changed to Faculty of Animal Husbandry (FAPET) based on Chancellor’s Decree No. 51/SK/1977 has two departments, namely: Animal Husbandry and Fisheries. Since July 5 1977, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry was changed to the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.
Further Developments
Based on Government Regulation no. 27 of 1982 and Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia No. 59 of 1982 concerning the Organizational Structure of Universitas Brawijaya, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries became two Faculties, namely the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and the Faculty of Fisheries.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0174/0/1983 concerning the Arrangement of Departments in Faculties within State Universities/Institutes and Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 118/Dikti/1984 concerning the types and number of Study Programs in each Department in the Faculty at Universitas Brawijaya, the Faculty of Fisheries is determined to have one department, namely: the Department of Aquatic Resources Management, which oversees three Study Programs, namely:
- Fisheries Resource Management Study Program (MSP)
- Fisheries Product Management Study Program (PHP)
- Fisheries Socioeconomic Study Program (SEP)
Meanwhile, two other study programs, namely the Aquaculture Study Program (BP) and the Utilization Fisheries Resource Study Program (PSP), are being held pending approval. In 1995, the Faculty of Fisheries, Universitas Brawijaya established the Fisheries Agrobusiness Diploma (D-IIl) Program. Then in 1996 the Nautical Diploma (D-III) Program was established, but since 1999 it has not accepted students. In line with the increasing need for intermediate experts in the field of fisheries and maritime affairs, in 2009 the Associate Expert Education Program (D-III) was reopened. In the 2009/2010 academic year, the Intermediate Expert Education Program (D-III) began accepting new students who were members of the Universitas Brawijaya Vocational Program.
Since July 7 1996, the Faculty of Fisheries, Universitas Brawijaya was determined to have one department and five study programs through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Department of Education and Culture No. 251/DIKTUKEP/1996, namely as follows:

In 2001, by Decree of the Ministry of National Education, the Director General of Higher Education No. 2534/D/T/2001 dated 2 August 2001, the Faculty of Fisheries received permission to organize a Master (S-2) program with the name Aquaculture Study Program.
In further developments, based on the Letter of the Postgraduate Director of Universitas Brawijaya No. 692/SK/2006 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of Postgraduate Programs at Universitas Brawijaya and Decree of the Chancellor of Universitas Brawijaya No. 692/SK/2006 concerning the Implementation of Postgraduate Programs at Universitas Brawijaya was transferred to the Faculty, starting from the 2006/2007 academic year, the implementation of the Aquaculture Masters Program was handled by the Faculty of Fisheries, Universitas Brawijaya.
In line with the increasing need to produce professional graduates in applying the principles of exploration, exploitation and management of fisheries and marine resources, since October 2 2006 the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources Utilization (PSPK) was formed. The formation of the PSPK Department was based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 226/D/O/2006. With the establishment of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resource Utilization (PSPK) and the Marine Science study program and based on the Decree of the Chancellor of Universitas Brawijaya Malang No. 041/SK/2008, the Faculty of Fisheries was renamed the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences.
Then based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 942/D/T/2008 dated 31 March 2008 and Decree of the Chancellor of Universitas Brawijaya No. 092/SK/2008 dated April 10 2008, the Department of Socio-economic Fisheries and Marine, Faculty of Fisheries, Universitas Brawijaya was formed. With the formation of this new department, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences has 3 (three) departments, namely:

With the Decree of the Chancellor of Universitas Brawijaya dated 27 February 2006 number: 30/SK/2006, the management of Postgraduate Programs at Universitas Brawijaya gradually returned to each faculty according to their field of study.
The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya began to open registration for new students for the Fisheries and Marine Sciences Doctoral Program in the odd semester of 2008/2009 with permission from the Chancellor of Universitas Brawijaya dated April 22 2008 number 1357/J10/AK/2008 and reinforced by the letter from the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education number : 69/D/T/2009 dated 2 January 2009 concerning Permit to Implement New Study Programs at Universitas Brawijaya.
